Santiago - A fire that engulfed a slum in Chile's northern city of Antofagasta has destroyed at least 40 homes and left some 200 people without shelter.
Officials say at least two people are missing after the fire late Thursday at Campamento Luz Divina. Firefighters are investigating the cause of the blaze.
Karen Rojo is the mayor of the port city of Antofagasta. She tells local Radio Cooperativa that most of the people affected are immigrants from nearby countries who lack permission to be in Chile and fear being deported to their home countries.
Local authorities have opened a food kitchen and a chapel to assist families displaced by the fire.
