IS militants tell 300 families convert or die

Baghdad - Islamic State militants have threatened to kill more than 300 families from Iraq's Yazidi ethnic minority unless they convert to Islam, witnesses and a Yazidi lawmaker told Reuters on Saturday.

The families in the villages of Koja, Hatimiya and Qaboshi are surrounded by the Sunni militants who are mounting an offensive through northern Iraq which has sent tens of thousands of Yazidis and Christians fleeing for their lives, prompting international outrage.

UK aid

The first consignment of British aid to civilians sheltering in the Sinjar Mountains of northern Iraq is expected to be dropped "imminently", Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said on Saturday.

However, he warned that aid drops were only a short-term solution and said officials were looking at how to help members of the minority Yazidi community who fled Islamic State extremists to a safer place.

Two Royal Air Force (RAF) C-130 transport planes took off from Britain earlier Saturday carrying reusable filtration containers filled with clean water, tents, tarpaulins and solar lights that can also recharge mobile phones.

"We can expect a continuing drumbeat of airdrop operations working in co-ordination with the US and potentially with others as well," Hammond told reporters following a meeting of the government's emergency Cobra committee.

"But more widely we are looking at how to support this group of people and get them off that mountain, how we are going to facilitate their exit from what is a completely unacceptable situation."

The United States has already started dropping food and water on Mount Sinjar and is conducting air strikes against militants, although Britain has said it currently has no plans for any military intervention.

Britain's Department for International Development on Friday released $13m in emergency humanitarian aid for Iraq.

This includes 2 million of emergency supplies for 75 000 people, including the Yazidis.

There is nothing islamic about IS.Their actions are a mockery of islam. Was reading about the history of Palestine. The lessons on what islam truly is about can be found in it. Many lessons from Umar taking over Jerusalem including his appearence when he entered, why he the muslim ruler was personally present etc. For the sake of brevity as far as is possible - In late April 637, Jerusalem was officially surrendered to the muslims. For the first time, after almost 500 years of oppressive Roman rule, Jews were once again allowed to live and worship inside Jerusalem. It has been recorded in the annals of Muslim chronicles, that at the time of the prayers, Sophronius invited Umar to pray in the rebuilt Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Umar declined, fearing that accepting the invitation might endanger the church's status as a Christian temple. With great wisdom and as a precaution against future generations actions he took action to protect the church. He made a treaty with the Christians to allow them to practice freely guaranteeing the safety of their lives and religion.. 400 years into the occupation of Palestine by the Muslims during the time of the crusades, Christians were still the majority in the country. In complete contrast to IS this shows the true teachings of compassion and mercy for all and no compulsion in religion. Long story short on the 2nd of October, 1187. Salahudeen entered Jerusalem after a 12-day siege. There was no bloodshed. There were no massacres. Those who wanted to leave were permitted to do so, with all their goods. Those who wanted to stay were guaranteed protection for their lives, property, and places of worship...Longer story shorter On entering Jerusalem in 1517 the ottoman sultan Selim was entrusted with keys to Al –Aqsa and the Dome of the Rock. A delegation of Christian clerics presented him with a scroll containing the original covenant of  ‘Umar, guaranteeing them rights over the Church of the Holy places. Selim pressed them to his face and kissed them, confirming his intention to honour ‘Umar’s word. That is almost 900 hundred years later..
