Israeli army says 2 rockets fired from Gaza

Jerusalem - Two rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip early on Friday landing in empty fields in southern Israel just hours ahead of the expiration of the 72-hour ceasefire that ended a month of violence, the Israeli army said.

The rockets fell into an open area in southern Israel and caused no casualties, it added. There has been no immediate Israeli response.

No one claimed responsibility for the rockets and it was not clear if it was the Hamas group that had fired them. There are a number of militant groups in the crowded territory that operate outside the control of Hamas with rockets of their own.

The rockets threaten to unleash a new round of violence after a month of fighting that has claimed nearly 1 900 Palestinian lives with 67 deaths on the Israeli side.

Indirect talks between Israelis and Palestinians have been taking place in Cairo to extend the cease-fire, but Hamas representatives had threatened to resume fighting if their demands to end the blockade on Gaza in place since 2007 were not met.

Israel has said that the militants must disarm first, a demand dismissed by Hamas.

The blockade, which Israel says is needed to prevent weapons from reaching Gaza, has led to widespread hardship in the Mediterranean seaside territory. Movement in and out of Gaza is limited, and the economy has ground to a standstill and unemployment is over 50%.

The war grew out of the killing of three Israeli teens in the West Bank in June. Israel blamed the killings on Hamas and launched a massive arrest campaign, rounding up hundreds of its members in the West Bank, as Hamas and other militants unleashed rocket fire from Gaza.

On July 8 Israel launched an air campaign on the coastal territory, sending in ground troops nine days later to target rocket launchers and cross-border tunnels built by Hamas for attacks inside Israel.

During the time of the ceasefire. I am waiting for my friends to tell me how cruel it will be for Israel to return fire.

They (Hamas or who ever) just looking for trouble now. They will find it if they keep it up. Israel wants peace. No rockets and weapons in Gaza and they will lift the blockade. So simple.

I can understand all the criticism laid at Israel all the time - they are the stronger side and thus will ALWAYS be seen as an aggressor in the eyes of many even though its just self defence. Before the last conflict started, Israel asked Hamas to stop the rockets for two weeks before the IDF retaliated. Israel requested the world powers, the UN, Qatar and Turkey but they were ALL either too busy watching the World Cup in Brazil or laughing at Israel for they sponsor the rockets in any case (Qatar). Before new pictures of death and destruction start flooding the news; I urge all Hamas supporters, lay your ideological and religious bias aside - please put pressure on Hamas to stop the violence before more children die! the loss of one child has caused Israel to lose this war already - this while Hamas had a "victory" rally in Gaza yesterday!?!? Victory while so many children are dead I could never understand?? many try and defend Hamas saying they do not use human shields - but their "victory" celebrations are proof that Hamas, Like ISIS or Boko Hamaram have zero value for human life, yet alone Israelis. This is the crux; Haams fires rockets indiscriminately at Israeli civilians while hiding behind their own civilians. Even if you do support the Palestinian cause supporting Hamas makes you complicit in the death of civilians who Hamas view as Martyrs and part of their Jihad. Its time people stood up to Hamas so that killings will end, InshAllah they will end.
