Kangaroo hops it in Germany

Düsseldorf - An escaped kangaroo remained at large in Germany's Sauerland tourist area on Sunday, with police saying they have no idea where the marsupial is or who its owners are.

The most recent sighting of the kangaroo was on Thursday evening in the western town of Olsberg, with several callers telling police they had spotted it.

An amateur hunter caught the animal on camera. "It was really a special kind of experience," he told broadcaster WDR.

Police said that the kangaroo had to be caught soon as it presented a danger to traffic. Once caught, it would be looked after by other kangaroo owners in the area. These owners have counted all their animals and none are missing, police said.

There is also no circus travelling through the area at the moment, they added.

This is not the first kangaroo to have escaped in Germany.

One escaped from a zoo in the southern city of Ulm and went on a hopping spree through the Swabian landscape before being caught. A video if it on railway tracks was an internet hit.

In the state of Hesse, two privately kept kangaroos nipped out of an open garden gate, but they did not enjoy their freedom for long before being trapped again.

At the beginning of April two kangaroos got away from their owner near Cologne, but they hopped back to their enclosure by themselves.
