Minute of silence for migrants tops Austrian radio charts

Vienna - A music track consisting of a minute of silence in support of asylum seekers in Austria has entered the country's main pop charts at number one, the public pop radio station Oe3 announced on Wednesday.

Austrian artist Raoul Haspel has said that he created the track Schweigeminute (Minute of Silence) to protest against Austria's inadequate care for refugees, and as a call for more empathy and kindness towards migrants.

After Schweigeminute debuted on iTunes on August 21, it quickly rose to the top of the online music platform's Austrian single charts.

Now that the song also tops the radio charts, Haspel on Wednesday donated the download revenue that the song has brought so far.

The $7 518 are going to one of several citizen groups that collect supplies for asylum seekers in Traiskirchen, Austria's largest camp for such migrants.

"I want to help in a direct way," Haspel said.
