North Korea grants interview with alleged South Korean spies

Pyongyang - North Korea presented two South Korean alleged spies to US journalists for an interview during which they admitted the charges against them, according to the account published on Monday.

Each confirmed their alleged crimes to CNN reporters while accompanied by their respective minders in separate hotel rooms in Pyongyang at the weekend.

Pyongyang first announced in March it had detained Kim Kuk Gi and Choe Chun Gil for spying for South Korea. Seoul has confirmed they are citizens, but repeatedly denied they were spies.

Choe, aged 56, said he doing business in China when he was recruited by Seoul's National Intelligence Service to collect information and material from across the border in North Korea.

After three years, he said he was arrested while collecting boxes from North Korea, one of which included some material with potential military use, the report said.

Kim, aged 61, said he was working as a missionary, also in China, and had been offered money for obtaining travel plans abroad of senior North Korean officials, and samples of new North Korean money for forgery.

The details of the accounts are close to earlier accusations by North Korean officials, but CNN said it was unable to verify them further.

North Korea holds several South Koreans on charges or convictions of espionage.
