Pakistan foils airbase attacks, 5 killed

Islamabad - Gunmen attacked two airbases in south-western Pakistan overnight before being repelled by security forces, who killed at least five of the assailants, the military said on Friday.

The militants tried to storm the Khalid and Samungli air bases in Quetta, capital of Balochistan province, the statement said.

The fatalities occurred at the Khalid facility, in the north-east of the city. "The bodies are in custody of security forces," the military said. "No loss or damage occurred to any asset."

The attack on the Samungli base, around 12km to the south-west, was also repelled.

About a dozen security personnel injured in the gun battles, provincial police chief Muhammad Amlish told reporters.

No one claimed responsibility, but Dawn newspaper reported that the attackers were Uzbek militants.

In June, militants stormed Karachi International airport, prompting Pakistan to launch operations against rebel strongholds in the tribal region of North Waziristan.

More than 600 militants have been killed in those operations, according to military sources.
