  • The Rwanda Defence Force says the DRC fired two 122mm rockets into their territory.
  • Rwanda reported the incident to the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region.
  • The DRC claims Rwanda sent 500 special forces into northern Kivu.

The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) says the Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) army has, for the third time in the space of two weeks, bombed Rwandan territory.

In a statement issued late on Friday, the RDF claimed the DRC's national army fired two rockets at around 12 noon.

"The DRC armed force, FARDC, fired two 122mm rockets into Rwanda from the Buganana area, striking around the Rwanda-DRC border in Nyabigoma Cell, Kinigi Sector, Musanze District on 10 June 2022 at 11:55," the RDF said.

Luckily, according to the RDF, there were no casualties - unlike the first two attacks on 19 and 23 May.

Tensions remain high between the two countries as they accuse each other of working with rebel forces.

The RDF said the latest incident had been reported to the Expanded Joint Verification Mechanism - a team comprised of military experts from the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) member states.

The ICGLR is made up of Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Congo, DRC, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia.

The RDF said that, by reporting the incident to the ICGLR, it sought to "assure the population that efforts to resolve this issue are underway and their safety is assured".

The latest incident comes a few days after the DRC alleged that Rwanda had sent 500 disguised special forces into northern Kivu, a claim Rwanda has refuted.
