The housing construction for the Mahama Housing Project, in Mandela Park, is set to get underway in the coming weeks as the City of Cape Town wraps up the installation of the underground infrastructure at the site.

The project, adjacent to the busy Walter Sisulu Drive (closer to Batandwa Ndondo Road), has been a hive of activity since the second half of last year.

A total of 259 families from the immediate vicinity and the surrounding communities will benefit from the project, which is designed to ease the housing backlog in the area.

According to Ward 97 councillor Mtwalo Mkutswana, infrastructure development will be concluded on Friday 15 March.

“We are going to start the second phase of the project,” he told City Vision, adding that work will be concluded early next year.

He stated that the names of the beneficiaries are not known yet, but cited that the majority of them are from within the ward. “We have different categories of beneficiaries. Some are backyarders, disabled and senior citizens, all are within the ward. And some people come from other wards within Khayelitsha. However, we have not verified the names of the beneficiaries yet because we are still awaiting the names from the City,” explained Mkutswana.

He urged the community to be patient and not vandalise the project.

He said a fence used to protect the site was stolen. “I’m appealing to the community to protect their facilities. They must protect everything that is in their areas. Because the vandalism is delaying the project,” said Mkutswana.
