In an effort to encourage a healthy living lifestyle, Lwandle Athletic Club will be hosting a Lwandle Athletic 10 km and 5 km Fun Run on Workers Day (Wednesday 1 May).

The race will start at Lwandle Stadium via Nomzamo to Zola and back to the stadium.

The club chair Buyiswa Matyesha described the race as one of its kind. She said it’s the first time such an event occurred in the area.

“We have 10 km and 5 km races on the same day. The 10 km is mainly for seniors and it starts at 06:30. And 5km Fun Run is for both juniors and seniors, especially those who are not fit to run but want to be the part of the race and it start at 06:50. The ages starts from eight years upwards,” explained Matyesha, adding that they are expecting to have at least 2 000 participants.

People can register online at webtickets or go to the nearest PnP or register on the day. Gates will open at 05:00.

“For those who will participate in 10 km who have a licence it’s R90 and for those who don’t it’s R140 with temporary licence. There is no licence for 5km Fun Run,” she explained.

Matyesha said there will be prizes for each category.

“There are different categories. Each top three in the specific category will receive prizes.

“There is an open (both men and women), 40-49, 50-59, 60-69- 70 plus and juniors (15-19) categories,” she said, but declined to mention the prizes.

Matyesha declared that the race is part of fundraising for their junior team that is going to participate in cross country running.

The competition will be held at various venues from Sunday 28 April until Monday 29 July.
