Samora Machel police are probing the circumstances surrounding the death of three people, including an off-duty police constable.

The trio, a 26-year-old woman, her one-year-old daughter and the police officer, died around 19:00 last night at Basil February Street in Samora Machel.

A 13-year-old girl was wounded in the leg.

Provincial police spokesperson Lt-Col Malcolm Pojie said: “Preliminary investigation suggests that the off-duty police constable shot his girlfriend, her daughter and wounded a 13-year-old girl in the leg who resides at the same address. He then went to his car where he allegedly turned his service pistol on himself,” explained Pojie.

He said the 13-year-old was transported to hospital while the other three were declared dead on the scene.

Pojie said two counts of murder, an attempted murder and an inquest docket were opened for investigation.

Bongani Maqungwana, the spokesperson for the Samora Machel Community Policing Forum (CPF), said they were shocked by the incident.

He urged the Department of Police to provide anger management course for the officers. "There were rumours that the officer didn’t want to be dumped by his girlfriend,” concluded Maqungwana.
