Nyanga police are investigating a double murder and an attempted murder case following a shooting incident that took place at Nyanga Taxi Rank on Wednesday 17 January.

Provincial police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk said the incident occurred at about 13:00 and two adult males were shot and fatally wounded.

“The motive for this incident forms part of the police investigation,” he said. "The suspect(s) fled the scene and are yet to be arrested."

Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) spokesperson Nkululeko Sityebi confirmed the incident. However, he stated the incident took place at a nearby church where the taxi owners had held a meeting. “I can confirm the shooting occurred and two of our members died in the incident," he said.

"They were ambushed coming out of a local church near the taxi rank where they had held a meeting, and did not occur at the taxi rank. As a taxi association in Nyanga we are not yet open, and we were planning to do so next week.”

Sityebi urged law-enforcement agencies not to leave any stone unturned. “The case is handed over to the officers for investigation. We are hoping they will find the perpetrators sooner than later.”
