Optometrist Carl van der Heyde has scaled down to concentrate on Spec-Savers Strand Square, ensuring it provides the sheer quality for which the eye-care brand is renowned and far exceeding it.

This branch is open for business at Shop 19B, Strand Square shopping centre.

According to Van der Heyde, friendly customer care and strong levels of empathy and understanding – in which a customer’s needs are fully grasped – as well as great skill govern Spec-Savers Strand Square’s philosophy of service.

Its optical dispenser, Gerald Petersen, for example, has a comprehensive understanding of optics, the manufacturing and repair of spectacles, and Karen Swart, the friendly manager, ensures the administrative business runs smoothly, creating a homely, friendly customer experience.

Van der Heyde himself brings 25 years of optometric experience, including as franchisee, having qualified as an optician in 1994 and optometrist 10 years later.

Spec-Savers Strand Square is always running promotions.

“We can deal with any spectacle emergency,” says Van der Heyde.

State-of-the-art examination equipment can detect systemic vascular conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and cholesterol as well as ocular pathology such as cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.

Free eye tests and spectacles are also on offer for children aged 6 to 12 years.

Van der Heyde says many children, for instance, are wrongly diagnosed with attention-deficit disorder when, in fact, they cannot see the blackboard and very often their parents cannot afford the spectacles needed. He says it is such gaps that Spec-Savers Strand Square takes huge pride in filling.

“It gives me a deep sense of joy to see a child looking at a tree, at clouds and mountains or at someone’s face in detail for the first time.” Van der Heyde says if a condition is beyond the practice’s scope, there is a network of specialists, such as ophthalmologists, to draw on.
