John David Floyd: 21 January 1948 † 8 April 2024
The Hottentots Holland region had the Somerset West Motor Club (SWMC) as the door to regional rallying and the popular Pop’s Robert Interclub Championship.
John David Floyd had Links Garage and was chair of the SWMC. In rallying, he prepared the Volkswagen Golf of David John Crossley and then he would become the navigator in the Western Province Regional Rally Championship. As in any sporting environment there were great results and not such great results. Losing a new car in a fire, possibly the lowest point while the most memorable results were not always reflected in silverware. Only those who have experienced the close relationship that exists between driver and navigator will be able to relate.
The Pop’s Robert Interclub Championship was a fierce “friendly” challenge between the five rally clubs in the Western Province and the SWMC would knock the Cape Peninsula Motorcycle and Car Club off the top spot with John David Floyd as chairman.
The Witzenberg Motorklub would become a sibling of the SWMC and they would become the club to beat with the Cape Car & Motorcycle Club and Western Province Motor Club (WPMC) bringing the total to five.
Serge Damseaux and Neil Watt were the obvious SWMC star combination, but Crossley and Floyd held their own against stiff opposition for many seasons.
Drive Time on Radio Helderberg 93.6FM (from the days of 95.9FM) became his passion after competitive participation faded into memory and his passion for anything with wheels was an obvious reflection. Making trophies for the WPMC Drag Section, commentating, testing cars and covering Formula 1 for various publications brought great pleasure until health did not allow travelling extensively.
Floyd touched many in many ways, but there is no denying that he made an enormous contribution to motor sport and general motoring.
Those “quick”, hour-long phone calls will be missed.
To his loving wife for 56 years, Jennifer Floyd, sons Gavin and David, and daughters Paula-Jayne Baker, Lindsay du Preez and Ada Floyd, and relations our sincere condolences.
‘Til we meet again!
