Local boxers championed the ring to much delight of spectators in the crowd at the much-anticipated relaunch of a boxing gym in Strand this past weekend.

Showtime Boxing, which is located at 209 Main Road, hosted its first boxing event as the relaunched Strictly Fighters Inc on Saturday 20 April.

The event comprised of 14 bouts featuring avid and seasoned boxers from all over the Western Cape province showcasing theit talents and battling it out for title honours. Coinciding with the gym relaunch, the event allowed for the local community to put face to the name of its proud new owners Shaun Els, Tyrone van Aarde, Lunga Nkentsha and Olivia Jade Williams.

In addition to boxing, Strictly Fighters Inc boasts the new addition of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and self-defence to its offering.

The bout of the evening went to Khayamandi Boxing Academy’s talented boxer Jamaal Eckstein and Khayelitsha Boxing Academy’s gifted sparrer Eza Hassan who enthralled with a thrilling match.

The boxer of the evening was Leo Knoetze of Khayamandi Boxing Academy in Stellenbosch.

In addition to launching and showcasing the gym’s new venture, the event also sought to draw attention to its talented boxers. Apart from Strictly Fighters Inc’s clientele, the gym nurtures five Lwandle boxers (between the age of 17 to 19) who have been training at the facility and forms part of the official boxing team. Some of the team members have recently competed in the Cape Winelands Open Boxing Youth and Elite Championships, qualifying to compete at the Western Cape Open Boxing Youth and Elite Trials to be held later in May.

The relaunched community boxing asset hopes to gain traction and support from the Helderberg community to further the dreams of aspiring boxers.
