A week of autumn graduation ceremonies at the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, officially ends today, 11 April, with the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences at the Bloemfontein campus. The programme began on Thursday, 4 April, at the university’s campus in Welkom.

The institution confers qualifications ranging from degrees, diplomas, and certificates to a total of 4 043 students. Of these, 18 individuals received doctoral degrees and 38 were awarded master’s degrees. The graduates receiving degrees add to the 66 616 degrees the university has conferred from 2004 until 2023.

Prof. David Ngidi, CUT deputy-vice chancellor of Teaching and Learning, said this year’s graduation was historic to the CUT, in celebration the institution’s 20th anniversary and also its accreditation of full status as a university of technology in 2004.

“In 2004, the CUT was declared a university of technology, achieving numerous achievements while pursuing academic excellence and serving the region. The university’s 20 years of excellence are remarkable achievements, and the institution continuous raising the bar regarding the number of graduates who receive their qualifications, said Ngidi, adding that the 66 616 degrees conferred was a testimony of the university’s commitment to academic excellence.

The highlights of the graduation ceremonies was Para athlete and multi-gold medallist Karabo Morapedi, receiving his national diploma in Public Management on Thursday, 4 April. He studied at the Welkom campus and overcame numerous obstacles that might have discouraged several people pursuing a post-matric qualification. Morapedi attended the Martie Du Plessis Special School in Bloemfontein.

The highlights saw the institution also confer an honorary doctorate degree of Philosophy in Management to Dr. Michael Jordaan on Tuesday, 9 April. This recognises his exceptional contributions to business leadership.
