The five suspects accused of the attempted murder of Kouga DA municipal Ward 4 councillor and mayoral committee member, Jaques Alexander made a brief appearance at the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court on April 19, with the matter being postponed to April 25, provisionally for bail application.
As previously reported by Kouga Express, police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said that Alexander was shot at by two suspects while parking his vehicle in front of the Kouga Municipality main building in Da Gama Road, Jeffreys Bay, on February 29.
Two suspects were swiftly arrested by police, and two more were apprehended shortly thereafter.
The four suspects are Mthumzi Lani, Lutho Mbatha, Luciano Jacobs, and Athenkosi Gidane.
Naidu said that an additional suspect, Andy Davids, was arrested on March 24.
Davids then appeared in the Humansdorp Magistrate's Court on March 26, April 9, and finally again on April 19, alongside his co-accused.
Luxolo Tyali, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, confirmed that all five suspects have been accused of attempted murder and theft of a motor vehicle.
He further said that during their court appearance on April 19, the matter was postponed to April 25, provisionally for bail application.
Despite Lani, Mbatha, Jacobs, and Gidane initially abandoning their bid for bail, during their court appearance on March 8, Tyali said, “The suspects still reserve their right to apply for bail, should they decide to.”
