Two female suspects, Chumisa Phunguzwa (35) and co-accused Bongo Yonela Dipa (24) from Tsolo, briefly appeared in the Tsolo Magistrate’s Court facing allegations of the unlawful discharge of a firearm and attempted murder, on December 1, 2023. They were released on R2 000 bail each.

Hawks’ spokesperson, Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, confirmed that the matter was remanded to February 5, 2024, for further investigation.

He said that they were arrested by the Provincial Cash-In-Transit (CIT) Task Team of the Serious Organized Crime Investigation of the Hawks during the early hours of November 30, 2023.

He said that it is alleged that the pair attended the funeral service of an alleged CIT robbery suspect that took place at N2 Tsolo junction on October 15, 2023.

They were reportedly amongst the attendees in the burial service which was held at Mcetywa location in Tsolo. They further allegedly fired shots unlawfully in a public space during the said funeral service, celebrating the life of the deceased. Due to the alleged random shooting incident one person was allegedly injured.

He added that a case docket was opened and transferred to the CIT task team of the Hawks for intensive investigation.

According to Mhlakuvana, the investigation revealed that the pair were amongst the people that were identified during the alleged incident.

“Moreover, a comprehensive investigation resulted in the execution of a warrant of arrest which was authorised, hence their arrest.”
