The Mthatha based Serious Organise Crime Investigation team of the Hawks (SOCI), together with Mthatha K9 Unit and Flying squad arrested three suspects aged between 24 and 34  for possession and dealing with drugs on Friday, October 13.

The trio’s arrest came as a result of information from members of the public about a suspicious house that is alleged to be selling drugs at Cwenga Tavern at Sprigg street in Mthatha.

The information was then followed by the joint team members with the aim of conducting disruptive operation. The report further revealed that upon their arrival at the said tavern, a search was conducted resulting three suspects, one male and two females being caught red-handed selling drugs.

"Furthermore, the information indicated that they were in possession of 70 grams of cocaine, 24 grams of Tik and an estimated amount of R5858 cash. The estimated street value of drugs is about R7000," Lieutenant-Colonel Avele Fumba of Hawks said.

The trio was ultimately arrested by the joint operation and charged with possession of drugs accordingly. They are expected to make their first court appearance at Mthatha Magistrates court on Monday, October 16.

The Provincial Head of the Hawks in Eastern Cape, Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya has expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the manner in which the members of the public support the police with information regarding crime. The General further commended the members for their swift response which resulted to the arrest.
