The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in the Eastern Cape went around Nelson Mandela Bay this afternoon, September 29, effecting arrests for alleged fraud, corruption and the contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act.
The Hawks planned on arresting eight people, consisting of DOP councillors, former DA councillors, an ANC secretary and high-ranking municipal employee, among others. While some were arrested at their homes, other handed themselves over to the Hawks over the course of the afternoon.
During an unrelated media briefing at City Hall earlier today, loud sirens and a commotion could be heard outside as the Hawks arrived to arrest the high-ranking municipal employee. However, she was not in her office but reportedly at her lawyer's office. She later handed herself over to police.
Several people, members of the media and the Hawks in various vehicles were gathering around outside City Hall before driving off to effect another arrest.
More information to follow in due course.
