More than 1 000 Manenberg residents joined the Palm Sunday on 24 March for Hope, protesting against criminal behaviour, gender-based violence (GBV) and the destruction of the community moral fibre.

On the day, police and the community policing forum alongside the spiritual social crime prevention united against crime.

Gang hotspots were identified and visited within the Heideveld area.

“Our communities have suffered the hardship of the loss of too many young people. The communities are now experiencing so much trauma that they are experiencing Stockholm syndrome. This is where communities are part of the problem and cannot find the solution to address the challenges they face,” says police spokesperson, Capt Ian Bennett.

The spiritual fraternity plays a vital role in restarting moral regeneration, he adds.

“We have now reached a point where communities need to see that they need to play an active role in reporting crime,” concludes Bennett.
