The community of the University of the Western Cape (UWC) is traumatised and saddened about the death of a third-year student on Sunday.
Kamva Dasi (22) was shot and killed on Saturday while on his way with friends to withdraw money at an ATM in Belhar.
Gasant Abader, spokesperson for UWC, says Dasi was shot during an armed robbery.
“We have reached out and is in contact with the immediate family. The campus community – including students and staff – is in a state of grief. Counselling has been offered to those affected and our full support will be provided in all instances,” says Abader.
He says students who may need professional and confidential counselling and psychological services can contact the Centre for Student Support Services.
According to Ismael Arnold, spokesperson for the community policing forum (CPF) in Belhar, Dasi was walking with six friends when they were approached by a blue/black VW Golf.
“Four men got out and proceeded to rob them at gunpoint. A scuffle broke out and Dasi was hit and died a few metres away from where he was shot. It is believed that three shots were fired during the incident,” says Arnold.
During March seven murders and 12 reported cases of student robberies were reported, says Arnold.
