On Saturday, September 30, AfriForum’s Kariega branch, in collaboration with other local organisations, embarked on a cleaning operation of historical landmarks in Kariega.

This was done as part of the #OnsDorp campaign which is undertaken at a national level by AfriForum branches. Volunteers cleaned the market square and the Anglo-Boer War Monument on this square and painted a wall next to the monument.

According to Wikus van der Walt, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Eastern Cape, the preservation of heritage landmarks and sites is essential and that is precisely why it was decided to focus on the maintenance of historic landmarks in this historic town with this cleaning action. “We have to remember where we came from, so we can know where we are going,” explains Van der Walt.

Van der Walt argues that the cooperation between communities and organisations in projects such as these creates hope. “Taking action with a focus on the community is essential in creating a better future,” he says.

Tania Pienaar, chairperson of AfriForum’s Kariega branch, added, “We invite the community to join the Kariega branch and help build a better future together.”
