A 52-year-old suspect will appear before Kariega Magistrate’s court on Tuesday, April 23 for charges of defeating the ends of justice and extortion for staging their own kidnpping. The suspect was arrested by Serious Organised Crime Investigation of the Hawks jointly with Crime Intelligence Gathering Kariega Detectives on Saturday, April 20.
Hawks Spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said on Tuesday, April 16 at about 16:00, the complainant allegedly received a phone call from her husband’s number who happens to be the suspect in the case informing her that he would not be coming home and that she should not involve the police while waiting for further instructions.
It is further alleged that the complainant acted contrary to the instruction and informed the nearest police station.
"She reportedly received a ransom demand of R60 000," said Mgolodela.
"The joint team pursued the investigations for five days until they made a breakthrough on Saturday, April 20," she added.
Mgolodela further added that following received information, the team located the suspect hiding under wooden pallets at the residence of the purported victim's cousin in Kariega, and the suspect was arrested on the spot.
"The car that was reported to have been driven by the victim was also found in the cousin’s residence.
"The vehicle and the 'victim’s' cellphone were seized," Mgolodela concluded.
The suspect will appear in Kariega Magistrate’s court on Tuesday, April 23.
