The role of the traditional prime minster of the Zulu kingdom has not changed hands since 1954 when the late Mangosuthu Buthelezi was appointed by King Bhekuzulu. Buthelezi succeeded his father and became the most important person within the Zulu nation after the monarch.
Every Zulu king since Shaka was served by a traditional prime minister and Buthelezi's 69 years in the position made him the longest-serving advisor to the throne. After his death on Saturday, the role is vacant.
