As South Africa emerged from the stench of apartheid into the roses of democracy, the man tasked with ensuring the democratic nation developed a foreign policy that many would be just as envious of as its Constitution, was Aziz Pahad.
Though he never ascended to the post of minister, South Africa's deputy minister of foreign affairs from 1994 to 2008 was well lauded and described as a diplomat par excellence. During this time, he was a member of Parliament too, with the institution noting his "exceptional diplomatic acumen, through which he skillfully navigated the complex waters of international relations".
