The rights of a child depicted in images as a cashier taken during a Curro school excurision were infringed upon to drive a narrative that does not hold water, writes Nthabi Nhlapo.

In many ways, South Africa is still a racist country. It is not uncommon for people of colour to be confronted by ugly situations that rub salt in the wounds of apartheid. I have experienced it many times, as have many other people. It's no secret we have a long way to go to become a true rainbow nation.

However, the recent racism controversy involving Curro and a little girl who was depicted as a cashier in photos taken on a school excursion was not racist. Social media users condemned the school for posting photos at a career day event where a black child posed as a cashier, a white child as a vet, and two white children were seen standing at a Capitec ATM.
