At the start of 2023, South Africa looked like it was finally turning a corner, with the National Treasury upbeat about bringing the country's ballooning government debt under control.
But things have taken a nightmarish turn in recent months. The economy has been hit by record load shedding, Transnet's woes, sky-high interest rates and inflation, along with a slump in mining profits, have throttled tax income. Meanwhile, government's borrowing costs have soared due to a range of factors including the country's greylisting.
Already facing tough trade-offs before, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana now has an almost impossible task.
On Thursday, 31 August 2023, he will sit down with News24's Carol Paton for a discussion about the difficult decisions ahead.
They will talk about dysfunction in government and how the country's key challenges are being addressed.
Godongwana is joining a formidable list of speakers at News24's On The Record Summit at the Kyalami International Convention Centre in Midrand, Johannesburg. On The Record, in partnership with Nedbank, is a full-day thought leadership summit that brings together leaders in business, politics, sport and civil society to exchange insights and plans on how to get South Africa thriving.
Join News24 editor-in-chief Adriaan Basson and his team of top editors and journalists on stage with panellists such as ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba, former Springbok coach Jake White and the country's anti-corruption czar Advocate Andrea Johnson from the Investigating Directorate.
News24 writer-at-large Sikonathi Mantshantsha will also sit down with the country's top business leaders. He'll hear from Business Leadership SA CEO Busisiwe Mavuso, JSE CEO Leila Fourie, Nedbank CEO Mike Brown, and Thungela Resources CEO July Ndlovu, to get an exclusive preview of the private sector's roadmap to restoring investor confidence in South Africa.
Other speakers on the day include Flux Trends founder Dion Chang and Campaign for Free Expression director Anton Harber.
