The landscape for free expression in South Africa is darkening, warns a major new report from the Campaign for Free Expression (CFE).
Although the country has enjoyed a great deal of openness since the dawn of democracy in 1994, the report identifies a startling number of growing threats to our freedom to speak out and to enjoy an open and free media.
These include assassinations, new laws, attacks on journalists, disruption of protests by the police, growing state surveillance of citizens and the violent silencing of women and groups such as LBBTQ+ people.
If you would like to read the Campaign for Free Expression's report, you can do so here.
Join a panel of top experts as they explore these and other realities, and what we can do about them, during a virtual discussion on Wednesday at 12:00.
The Executive Director of Campaign for Free Expression Anton Harber will host the discussion for Free Expression.
Harber will be joined by specialist legal journalist Karyn Maughan, Right2Protest Project Coordinator Omhle Ntshingila, and the author of the report Alan Finlay.
