Astron Energy is a proudly South African company who aims to be the biggest fuel brand in the country.

“We want Astron Energy service stations to be places of belonging, where people are welcome.”
Thabiet Booley, Astron Energy CEO

Who are they?

The company's legacy in SA spans over 100 years, and their network of more than 800 service stations in South Africa is being rebranded to Astron Energy.

Astron Energy was formed in 2018 when Chevron sold its majority shareholding in the South African entity. Since then, they've been operating the Caltex brand in SA under a license agreement.

With the support of majority shareholder Glencore, they envisaged creating something special in the market by consolidating their operations under a single, unifying brand identity. In 2021, they announced that Astron Energy would be the overarching brand across all their corporate, commercial, and retail channels, with a new brand identity at forecourts and other key sites.

You may have seen their fresh and distinctive orange and purple uniforms at a service station near you, or their TV commercials in which they've given SA the warmest of welcomes.

“The rebrand to Astron Energy brings something fresh and distinctive to the market.”
Thabiet Booley, Astron Energy CEO

What they do

They operate a crude oil refinery, a lubricants manufacturing plant, and a safe, reliable and efficient product supply network from 15 terminals across Southern Africa.

Their Milnerton refinery in Cape Town, the only crude oil refinery in the south-west of SA, supports several thousand direct and indirect jobs and is a significant contributor in ensuring security of supply to SA.

With a daily processing capacity of 100 000 barrels of crude oil, their refinery produces petrol, diesel, jet fuel and LPG. Post-restart they've also added the production of very low-sulphur marine fuel (VLSFO). In so doing, they've become SA’s only local production source of this important fuel for local and international sea-going vessels that meets new customer and global environmental requirements.

They look forward to continuing their role as a local SA manufacturer of these key refined products and supplying into the Western Cape and across South Africa for the foreseeable future.

Their lubricants plant in Durban produces innovative and flagship brands and specialised lubricants for industrial, commercial and consumer markets.

Though they have an extensive retail fuel network, their vision is to be more than just a petrol brand. Rather, it’s to be a leading African energy company, enabling growth, enriching lives, and delivering shared value to consumers, customers and communities. They're focusing on zero harm, their valued customers and employees, and win-win partnerships to bring this vision to life.

What drives them?

Astron Energy aims to be a high-performance organisation, to put people first, and strives to create an environment in which everyone is treated equally, fairly and with respect.

"We invest in the training and development of our people to operate at a global standard."
Thabiet Booley, Astron Energy CEO

Their people are at the centre of the massive task of rebranding over 850 forecourts. The numbers are staggering: more than 750 000 working hours, 1,3 million LEDs and more than 27 soccer fields in canopy cladding.

Their commitment to SA, its people, and the socio-economic development of the country is reflected in the R48 billion (1%) they contribute to SA’s GDP and the creation of more than 72,000 jobs according to a 2019 Economic Impact Assessment study. They know the continued success and sustainable growth of their company is intrinsically linked to the success of the country in which they operate. That’s why they’ve invested R21 million in youth empowerment, provide educational support to 250 000 learners and young people every year, and recycle the water used at their Cape Town refinery.

More than a fuel brand

Astron Energy understands that the world of fuel has changed. An energy brand focused solely on a fuel offering simply isn’t going to cut it. They’ve put a lot of work into redefining their fuel and non-fuel retail offerings, and are looking forward to launching future products and partnerships into this fresh and energised space.

As part of the new brand, they've launched:
  • A new rewards programme at selected Astron Energy sites that's more attainable and immediate, with simplicity of use and the chance to redeem daily rewards as part of a move towards gamification.
  • New Astron Energy Quartech Fuel 4-in-1 technology that fills smoother, protects longer, runs further, and keeps cleaner.

Their existing partnerships include FreshStop, SA’s leading convenience retail brand, bringing 24-hour shopping convenience to their forecourts. They also have Standard Bank’s UCount rewards programme which allows members to earn and spend rewards points when they fill up.

Astron Energy is in it for the long run and aims to be an integral part of the everyday lives of people in SA. They invite you to be part of their journey to becoming the biggest fuel brand in South Africa.
