In a significant stride towards fortifying its network infrastructure and enhancing resilience, MTN South Africa has embarked on an ambitious investment initiative in 2023. The network resilience program, aimed at mitigating the impact of load shedding and addressing challenges posed by criminal activities targeting power stations, is demonstrating notable progress across a number provinces.
MTN South Africa's commitment to this cause is underscored by a substantial investment of R1.5 billion into the Network Resilience Programme, a testament to the company's dedication to providing uninterrupted connectivity in the face of challenges such as load shedding.
Gauteng: Paving the Way for 100% Network Resilience
MTN's recent focus on network resilience in Gauteng has yielded impressive results. As part of a broader modernisation drive, network sites with resilience in Gauteng are currently achieving a daily network availability of between 95% and 98%. The current resilience rate stands at an exceptional 99.91% completion rate, with the expectation of reaching 100% network resilience rollout in the near future. This development underscores MTN's commitment to providing uninterrupted connectivity in the face of challenges such as load shedding.
KwaZulu-Natal: Modernisation Efforts in Full Swing
In KZN, MTN has already modernised 245 sites, with plans to reach a total of 317 by the end of 2023. This proactive approach is not only addressing the impact of load shedding but also combating theft of batteries and cables at power stations by criminals. Network sites with enhanced resilience in KZN are now achieving up to 98% network availability daily, reflecting the efficacy of MTN's network resilience program in this region.
Western Cape: Achieving High Network Availability
The Western Cape has experienced a significant boost in network infrastructure, with 230 additional sites deployed in 2023, totalling 429 sites. MTN's commitment to resilience is evident in the achievement of up to 99.4% network availability in sites with enhanced resilience. This progress is a testament to the effectiveness of the ongoing network resilience program, ensuring that communities in the Western Cape continue to enjoy seamless connectivity.
Continued Commitment to Rural Connectivity
Recognising the importance of extending connectivity to underserved communities, particularly in rural areas, MTN remains dedicated to expanding its network coverage. The company is on track to achieve 95% rural broadband coverage by 2025. In KZN, MTN's rollout of 14 rural sites this year, including successful completed sites in rural Greytown, Tugela Ferry, and Quachas Nek Border Post into Lesotho, exemplifies its commitment to closing connectivity gaps.
Innovative Solutions and Technological Advancements
MTN is leveraging cutting-edge technologies to address coverage challenges. The implementation of OpenRAN technology allows for the development and installation of 2G to 5G networks in previously unconnected areas, widening the ecosystem, lowering costs, and accelerating innovation. This forward-thinking approach positions MTN at the forefront of technology-driven solutions for enhanced network resilience.
MTN's commitment to network quality and resilience was recently affirmed through South Africa's largest-ever network quality testing project. Conducted in partnership with MyBroadband Insights, Analytico, Afristay, and Keysight distributor Coral-i, the results showcased MTN's exceptional performance, surpassing industry regulations set by ICASA. With an Average Call Setup Success Ratio of 98.20% and a Dropped Call Ratio of only 2.37%, MTN remains a leader in network quality.
Vigilance Against Challenges
While MTN's progress is commendable, challenges such as load shedding and criminal activities persist. Vigilance against site vandalism remains crucial, and community involvement is emphasised as a key factor in mitigating these challenges.
Criminals have continued to use the cover of darkness during load shedding as an opportunity to strike, but our fightback, with the support of our communities has been strong. We ask that you continue to support us in this drive by being vigilant and reporting any suspicious activity by calling 083 123 7867 or emailing anonymous@tipoffs.com.
As MTN South Africa continues to invest in its network resilience program, the company is poised to further elevate the connectivity experience for South Africans, ensuring that the benefits of the digital world are accessible to all. Expectations are high for continued acceleration in digital programs across all provinces in the coming year, solidifying MTN's position as a trailblazer in the telecommunications industry.
