OUTsurance and Kfm 94.5, in partnership with the Drakenstein and Stellenbosch Municipalities, are proud to announce the expansion of the OUTsurance Pointsmen initiative into Paarl and Stellenbosch.
In September 2005, the OUTsurance Pointsmen Project was launched to address road congestion in Johannesburg. At the time, a total of 21 previously unemployed men and women were trained by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and placed at high traffic volume intersections.
Following the success in Gauteng, a limited duration project was kicked off in Cape Town with OUTsurance Pointsmen deployed in the Cape Town City Centre from 2011 until 2017.
The overall project experienced tremendous growth due to the popularity and local demand, and currently employ 178 dedicated Pointsmen and women in Johannesburg and Tshwane.
Bheki Zondo, Chief Executive Officer at Traffic Freeflow who manages and runs the Pointsmen Project says ‘We are proud to be part of the expansion into Stellenbosch and Drakenstein, and we’re also pleased with the fact that these men and women have been expertly trained by the traffic department within the Stellenbosch and Paarl Municipalities.
‘On the 9th of January, we introduced the first group of OUTsurance Pointsmen at busy intersections in Paarl and Stellenbosch. The official launch will take place on the 19th of January in Paarl and the 20th of January in
Stellenbosch after which the Pointsmen and women will be out on the roads in full force with a total of 15
OUTsurance Pointsmen in Paarl and 15 reporting for duty in Stellenbosch.’
Their first shift will start at 7:00 until 9:00 with the second shift starting at either 13:00-15:00 or 16:00-18:00, depending on whether they will be directing school traffic or afternoon peak-hour traffic. They will be reporting to identified intersections on a daily basis or shuttled to areas affected by load shedding.
Zondo adds, ‘Our team at Traffic Freeflow will continue to provide project support, in the same way that we’re already doing in Johannesburg and Tshwane. We will work closely with the respective municipalities, traffic departments, and media partners in successfully implementing traffic control initiatives.
‘We encourage members of the public to notify us of faulty traffic lights or instances where traffic lights are out of order during load shedding.‘
‘The Pointsmen Initiative has proven itself as a long-term solution in not only improving traffic flow on our roads but also contributing to skills development of people within underprivileged communities,’ says Danie Matthee, Chief Executive Officer at OUTsurance.
‘In fact, over the past 17 years, the Pointsmen Initiative has created job opportunities for more than 280 matriculants from previously disadvantaged communities.
‘We look forward to making an even bigger impact in 2023 and we hope to expand this initiative to further contribute to the success of South Africa's road safety objectives.’
Kfm 94.5 Station Manager, Stephen Werner adds, ‘We are tremendously proud to be associated with this project and we know that our listeners in Paarl and Stellenbosch will most definitely benefit from this great initiative. We see this as the first step towards less congestion and happy motorists.’
