The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has accused the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party of being at the centre of the chaos and destruction in eThekwini amid a wage strike - and, in turn, the municipality blames the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu).

Samwu-affiliated civil servants embarked on the strike, which commenced on 27 February. The strike has crippled service delivery city-wide. The strikers are demanding wages on par with workers in category 10 municipalities, such as the Ekurhuleni Metro.

On Friday morning, provincial ANC secretary Bheki Mtolo said: "We believe that a few Samwu members and MK Party leaders must be held accountable for their actions. The MK Party is behind the destruction of billions worth of electricity and water infrastructure, which has put the lives of patients at risk. Many families are suffering as a result of blackouts and water outages."
