Deputy President Paul Mashatile, alluding to the EFF's sweeping Student Representative Council (SRC) victories on campuses, conceded that "gaps" had emerged at higher-education institutions because of the ANC Youth League's (ANCYL) 10-year inactivity. 

Addressing the ANCYL's 79th birthday event in Mpumalanga on Sunday, Mashatile, in his capacity as ANC deputy president, took a swipe at what he called the "populist, demagogic [and] self-aggrandising rhetoric", which he said had become prominent since the league was disbanded in 2013.

Mashatile said: "Over the challenging years of the ANCYL, many gaps have been opened up in society and in particular in institutions of higher learning, where the large youth mass is."
