Parliament passed the controversial Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill during the National Assembly's last sitting of the sixth administration, but opposition parties and some sectors of civil society are still intent on preventing the bill's enactment.
The DA, ACDP and Freedom Front Plus are staunchly opposed to the bill.
While there is fundamental resistance to the content of the bill – as is the case with a lot of legislation – opposition parties are also concerned about the process followed to pass the bill in what appears to be a rush to get it done before the sixth Parliament rises.
