South Africa’s murder rate is among the highest in the world, and experts warn it is a symptom of a violent society with little gun control or trust in the police.
The country's murder rate is 39 homicides per 100 000 people - higher than many countries associated with violent drug cartels, such as Colombia and Mexico. By comparison, the global average homicide rate, according to research by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, is 6.1 per 100 000.
This average increases to 13 per 100 000 for Africa countries.
