AmaBhungane has launched an urgent court application for "reconsideration" of an unprecedented gag order – secretly issued without the investigative journalism body even being heard – that will effectively block it from reporting on the Moti Group’s allegedly shady dealings.
"I do think that [this order] is an incredible threat to media freedom in the country," amaBhungane’s advocacy coordinator Caroline James told News24 on Friday night.
"We’ve described it as being unprecedented in democratic South Africa and I think that, if it stands, it provides an avenue for any powerful businessman or politician who is receiving adverse media reporting to approach the court to gag journalists. If this stands, it would be an opportunity for [such individuals] to do so in the future."
