  • A search has been launched for a boy who went missing in the sea at Noetzie Beach, near Knysna.
  • It appeared that the boy became caught in a rip current.
  • The incident follows the death of two boys in a kayaking accident in the Garden Route over the weekend.

Two days after two boys drowned in the Nature's Valley lagoon in the Garden Route, a boy has gone missing in the surf at Noetzie Beach, near Knysna.

According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), rescue swimmers, the police and ambulance services went to the scene just before 14:00 on Monday.

"On arrival on the scene, a search commenced for a local male child, aged approximately eight, who was reported missing in the water. It appears that the child had been swimming with friends when an adult on the beach suggested that they return to the beach," NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.

He suspected the child may have become caught in a rip current.

Lambinon added:

An adult bystander had reportedly attempted to rescue the child before the child then disappeared underwater. A local man, Duran de Villiers, volunteered his private helicopter that assisted in the search operation. NSRI rescue swimmers were deployed into the surf to conduct free dive sweeping line search efforts.

But, despite the extensive air, sea and shoreline search, there were no signs of the child.

Lambinon added that the search was ongoing.
