The Western Cape government has called for urgent intervention from Home Affairs following the displacement of more than 2 700 foreign nationals in the Cape Winelands due to alleged xenophobic threats.

Western Cape Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning MEC Anton Bredell wrote to Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi saying: "The Drakenstein Local Municipality and the Western Cape government are not in a position to provide continuous humanitarian relief to the affected people, and there are no shelters available to accommodate such a large group of people. The province and the municipality will continue to mediate efforts [on Thursday]."

Bredell said the provincial government would work with police and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees "with the aim to ensure conflict resolution and reintegration".
