During a webinar by the Institute for Security Studies, Vearey told Professor Elrena van der Spuy of the University of Cape Town's Centre of Criminology "harsh bureaucratic intervention" will be needed to "fix" the SAPS' leadership. He also suggested changes to the police's Crime Intelligence section, as well as relocating police stations.
"Demilitarisation, in general, should be a priority to change the [police] culture, the sense of dealing with problems through martial weaponry, language, arrangements, and approach to operations.
