  • Eight people, including former CEO of South Cape TVET College, have been arrested for fraud, corruption and theft.
  • It is alleged that unlawful quotations were submitted for a college construction and renovation project.
  • The college allegedly lost more than R24 million.

Eight people appeared in the George Magistrate's Court for fraud, corruption and theft in connection with a South Cape TVET College construction and renovation tender.

Some of them were public officials at the time the crimes were committed, Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani said.

It's alleged that between March 2009 and August 2013, college employees and contractors submitted bid documents and quotations for construction and renovations at all college campuses in violation of the relevant policies and procedures.

A preliminary investigation revealed that high-level managers were allegedly involved, according to Hani.

"This resulted in prejudice and a loss to the South Cape TVET College to the amount of over R24 million," Hani said.

The Hawks took over the investigation in 2014 and made the arrests on Thursday.

Pieter Johannes Sam was granted bail of R5 000.
