Gauteng will pay towards clearing the debt and interest obligations of the SA National Roads Agency (Sanral), as e-tolls are expected to be scrapped in the province at the end of March.

Finance MEC Jacob Mamabolo tabled the province's 2024/25 budget on Tuesday and said, "to resolve the funding impasse", the provincial government had agreed to contribute 30% of Sanral's debt and interest while the national government would cover the remaining 70%.

News24 previously reported that the e-toll system was meant to be scrapped on 31 December 2022. However, this was delayed while the provincial and national governments negotiated an agreement to support the deactivation. Sanral has struggled to recover the costs of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) through e-tolls, with many motorists refusing to settle their toll debts.
