  • Three City of Cape Town law enforcement officers helped a pregnant woman deliver a baby on the side of a road on Friday morning.
  • The officers were patrolling near Sunningdale when they came across the woman lying on the ground, in labour.
  • By midday, a healthy baby boy had been born.

City of Cape Town law enforcement officer Clinton Bonke has been praised for his quick thinking and bravery in helping a heavily pregnant woman deliver a baby boy on Friday morning.

Bonke and two other law enforcement officers, Ayanda Sinkwane and Mongezi Masoka, were conducting operations in Rivergate, near Sunningdale, around 10:45 on Friday when they came across a woman lying on a gravel road.

The trio then discovered that the woman was in labour and jumped into action, with Bonke leading their rescue efforts.

Cape Town Safety and Security MMC JP Smith said Bonke "managed to calm the distraught mother-to-be and guided her as she gave birth to a beautiful, bouncing baby boy at around midday".

Smith added that both mother and baby were in good health and were taken to a medical facility for observation by a family member who arrived on the scene.

"Officer Bonke said it was an unbelievable experience under extreme circumstances, considering it was the first time he helped deliver a baby."

Smith has since extended his well wishes to both the mother and her newborn.
