Management at Gold One says an apparent hostage situation at Gold One Modder East Operations in Springs is worsening as the mine's food reserves have run out.

Sunday marks the third day since a group of balaclava-wearing miners allegedly kept their colleagues, including 70 senior workers and contractors, underground against their will.

But according to the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), it is not a hostage situation and no one is being kept against their will.
