Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) students slept on the floor of the institution's District 6 and Mowbray campus halls after being unable to secure accommodation ahead of the commencement of the new academic year.
Students from various provinces flooded the university as classes started on Monday.
One first-year student from the Eastern Cape, who asked not to be named, said that during the application process, she indicated that she required accommodation, unaware that she needed to apply separately for a spot in a residence.
