  • Gold One has obtained an interdict against a strike at a Springs mine.
  • The dispute centres around union representation of the company's miners.
  • It is alleged that 500 miners have been detained underground.

Gold One has succeeded in interdicting a strike in which more than 500 workers are being held "hostage" at its mine in Springs, allegedly by members of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU).

The interdict, which the Labour Court granted against the AMCU and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on Monday, prohibits the detention of Gold One employees underground, prohibits striking workers from preventing non-striking workers from entering or leaving the company's premises, and prohibits strikers from damaging Gold One's property.

News24 previously reported that 543 miners were held "hostage" at Gold One's Modder East mine in Springs, allegedly by AMCU members.

But the AMCU members dismissed the claims and said the workers had remained underground as part of a protest.

One miner said workers had put money together on Monday morning to buy food and water, and that the supplies were sent underground to their colleagues.

The strike centres around union representation, with workers who have been signed up to NUM by default, seeking representation from the AMCU.

The AMCU said on Monday that it could not confirm a hostage situation.

In a statement, NUM said nine of its members had been injured when they were "assaulted by the hooligans who were preventing them from coming to the surface".
