  • The wife of a well-known Kariega businessman was kidnapped on 13 March 2024.
  • She was taken just a few metres from her front door.
  • The Hawks say they cannot divulge any information regarding the case, at this stage.

Sunday marks day four of the abduction of the wife of a well-known businessman in Kariega in the Eastern Cape, after she was snatched outside her home on Wednesday.

Sonam Gajjar, 34, was abducted from the driveway of her home as she was on her way to work at around 08:00.

She was waiting for the gate to close behind her, when she was ambushed by four men.

At the time, police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the men smashed the window on the driver's side of her vehicle, dragged her out of her car, and shoved her into a white Hyundai motor vehicle.

The four men then fled the scene in the vehicle and sped towards Motherwell.

Eastern Cape Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Avele Fumba said on Sunday that the Hawks are not in a position to divulge any information at this stage.

"We have been advised that we should not divulge any information related to this incident, until we get a true reflection of what really transpired," said Fumba.

"As soon as we get new developments on the matter, we will give an update."

The Hawks comment comes after they seemingly issued an update, by accident, on Saturday that stated the Kariega mom had been reunited with her family and was released by her kidnappers late on Friday, after a ransom was paid.

However, the statement was later removed.

When asked for comment, Fumba said: "[regarding the] returning part, we will confirm as soon as we receive further information".
