A miner and Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) leader at the Gold One mine in Springs, who was a key driver for the union's dramatic underground sit-in which played out two weeks ago, fears for his life after members of AMCU allegedly threatened to kill him.
He claims that his only crime was being seen in talks with members of the rival National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), where NUM shop steward Prince Radebe was present.
The mine's underground operations have been suspended since Thursday last week, with the protest action led by AMCU taking a violent turn this week. On Monday, striking workers were dispersed by police using rubber bullets and stun grenades.
