Racism is prevalent in Phoenix, north of Durban, and works to the disadvantage of the local African population.

This is according to the Cultural, Religious, and Linguistic (CRL) Rights Commission, which released its findings on the July 2021 civil unrest alongside the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in Durban on Monday.

Phoenix was placed under national scrutiny after 36 people were killed in vigilante attacks that coincided with looting and civil unrest in the aftermath of former president Jacob Zuma's arrest for contempt of the Constitutional Court in July 2021.
