Wernich Botha, who allegedly brutally assaulted two men in a parking area at a shopping centre in Klerksdorp, North West, has been released on R2 000 bail.

Botha, 33, appeared in the town’s Magistrate's Court on charges of attempted murder and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm on Thursday.

The matter was postponed to 19 October.

Botha's arrest comes after the vicious attack on two men – a 32-year-old and a 44-year-old – was caught on camera at a shopping centre in Doringkruin, Klerksdorp, on Sunday.

Video footage of the assault surfaced on social media, showing a man in a black shirt punching two people in the parking lot.

Both men fell to the ground after being punched, with one bleeding profusely from the head and face.

According to police, the victim was admitted to hospital with "severe brain injuries".

Police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh said the 44-year-old man suffered a shoulder injury and concussion.

Myburgh has since urged the public not to spread the video footage as it could hamper the investigation.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Sello Kwena condemned the incident, adding that conflict should be resolved peacefully and people should not resort to violence.

"Police will continue to work hard to ensure that criminals are put behind bars," Kwena said.
